Mangrove Afforestation
Mangrove Afforestation project aims at Development of an Ecosystem approach for integrated management of land, water, and living resources in and around Paravur Lake. The emphasis is not just on planting mangroves but on nurturing, securing and monitoring the saplings as well as instilling the need and importance of the same to the local community.
Description
Also we have started some work on the banks of Ashtamudi Lake as well. Mangrove forests, which grow in salt water in tropical regions, are especially effective at locking up “blue carbon” – so called to distinguish it from “green” carbon storage on land.
The mission of HELP Foundation is to promote healthy coastal ecosystems through a partnership-based, people-focused, policy-relevant and investment-orientated approach, which builds and applies knowledge, empowers communities and other stakeholders, enhances governance, secures livelihoods, and increases resilience to natural hazards and climate change.
We have now developed a nursery with capacity of 2000 saplings and its being nurtured in our Nursery so as to continue our Afforestation activities. We have also designed a special purpose boat for mangrove Afforestation activities. We believe the lessons learned and the experience garnered from the same would be of immense help for us to continue raising healthy mangrove saplings that could be used to protect the coastal water bodies. And this has been a continuous program to date and is still going strong and can be seen from the below link.
