River Conservation

Targets prevention of further deterioration of Paravur Lake and Ashtamudi lake, and aims at restoring the status of the lake as a provider of fresh water and as a rich biodiversity source to enhance livelihood of fishermen in the region. Once implemented, over the next 5 years, there will be improved catch of fish from the lake, as well as availability of potable water in the wells in the region around the lake.

Description

Our River Conservation activities focuses on the below three streams.

Awareness Creation: The main objective of the awareness building project is to ensure that there is enough knowledge among the local community, especially the younger generation, regarding the importance of preserving and regenerating the wetlands around them. This will create a high sense of ownership in the community regarding the ecosystem preservation and restoration.

Afforestation of native wetland plant communities: HELP Foundation has rich experience in the area of Riparian biodiversity conservation and restoration, with a clear understanding of the overall ecosystem equilibrium, as well as an in depth knowledge and practical experience regarding mangroves.

Sustainability & Capacity Building through Local Community Empowerment: The project is engineered be an ongoing sustainable activity. It’s based on local native community participation and local administrations involvement. HELP Foundation works with a citizen council with representation from local administration, native community and local schools.
