Wetland Conservation

Wetlands line coasts in many parts of the world. They act as natural sponges that soak up floodwaters and absorb force from storm surges, protecting communities further inland. Our Wetland Conservation activities (Paravur Lake, Kappil Kayal and Ashtamudi Lake ) focuses on the below

Description

  • Marked, Protected and Conserved Water Bodies with (Mangrove) Saplings along the edge of the water body in groups, such that fisher people are entrusted with the custodianship of the same.
  • Integrate Educational Institutions (Plus 2 schools or High School) to be entrusted with the charge of monitoring and protecting the lake and its banks on a regular basis through their eco clubs or Bhoomitrasena Clubs (Biodiversity Board) or NSS units so as to cover the entire stretch of the water body
  • Develop a permanent working platform with paid office bearers to coordinate needs and provide support through the respective local bodies (Panchayats) as and when needed on a regular basis.
  • A proper Ecosystem Based Management (EBM) approach developed by involving the local community, BMC of Local Self Government (LSG) Institutions, Forest Department, Revenue Department and next generation citizens.
  • To improve legal and policy frameworks, mangrove management tools, vegetation data and information collection, economic incentives to promote more environmentally responsible behavior and local livelihoods
  • Our work with respect to restoration of the Paravur Lake, Kappil Kayal and Ashtamudi Lake can be seen from the below link.
